Hair loss is a multi-billion dollar industry
There’s a lot of misconception and myth in the world of hair loss and balding, that is taken advantage of by a multi-billion dollar industry – and growing! Clinics and even dermatologists will do anything to sell their hair growth products as the latest ‘miracle cure’, because it pays them off handsomely.
Also, the hair loss industry preys on the stigma of baldness. The fear of getting older, compounded by the psychological toll of hair loss, can be profound when the anxiety of going out and being seen can far outweigh any potential enjoyment. One private consumer advocacy group calls balding a “devastating disease of the spirit” that affects “nearly every aspect of life.”
It’s a stigma that’s helping fuel a nearly $4 billion industry of hair loss prevention and restoration products in the U.S. alone, as men desperately buy medications, shampoos and even take surgical measures to save their strands.
(See our article on treatments for hair loss: Is there a cure for hair loss?).
Male pattern baldness is permanent
Unfortunately, most men are at risk of losing their hair, some more quickly than others (I know – it sucks!). The follicle itself shrivels up and dies and is rendered incapable of regrowing. This type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia, often referred to as male pattern baldness, and is the most common.
Get this – male pattern baldness is PERMANENT because the hair follicle dies. You can’t bring a dead cell back to life! If a follicle has closed, disappeared, is scarred, or has not generated a new hair in years, then a new hair wouldn’t be able to grow back.
The only kinds of hair loss that are not permanent are those that are due to stress, bad diet, medication, chronic health conditions or chemotherapy.
HOW DOES MALE PATTERN BALDNESS HAPPEN?
Male pattern baldness happens in two ways: by the thinning of each hair and by the overall loss of density. There are certain cases of hair loss that are not truly “permanent” – at least not immediately. Sometimes, it can be slowed down or delayed by certain products or supplements, but the hair loss eventually will be permanent.
Hair loss is caused by a genetic condition called androgenic alopecia, in which the steroid hormone dihydrotestosterone, (DHT), a byproduct of testosterone, causes follicles to shrink and stop growing. This most commonly happens at the temples, the crown, and the front of the head.
Hair loss can’t be stopped
Something called miniaturization happens to the follicle when a hair falls out. Miniaturization refers to the slow shrinking of the hair follicle and the thinning of the hair inside it, until eventually the follicle no longer exists. The remaining little hair falls out and nothing grows back.
What’s worse: Balding doesn’t typically become visible until you’ve already lost about half your hair, so by the time you realize there’s an issue, it can feel “too late.”
Androgenic alopecia is a genetic condition that cannot be controlled — which helps explain why it can feel so threatening and anxiety-inducing.
